Guy 'Yug' Blomberg | Making sense of online networking in 2021 - The Communities Show
How do we network until "life is back to normal"? Zoom vs IRL vs hybrid? Guy Blomberg has a Discord community and runs various online events as a solution.
This episode ends with a discussion about an inclusive invite-only community. Once again: 1. inclusive. 2 invite-only. Also heavily moderated.
The trick is: people are complex, and their cultures are diverse. To build a community, where everyone (who was able to pass the vetting…) feels comfortable, one has to define and enforce the rules.
Someone could bring up the “community starts with a culture“ as the solution. Maybe. The vetting and moderation process works for Guy, it works for their gamedev community. That’s how clubs work.
And there’s more in this episode: hybrid events, Zoom vs Discord, business networking and Xsolla Diamond Club.

The Communities Show runs on our Discord server and is supported by a friendly pancultural community. Most speakers are our community members.
Run The World is just $150 instead of $429
This is an offer from our partners, but the copy is mine.
I think that Run The World is a decent solution for a virtual event, and I like the team behind it. I would build a virtual event or even a series of interactive meetups on it if I could not use Discord.

Weekly Motivation
In this episode with Guy, we talked about having meaningful online networking. But just last week I had a set of IRL meetings, two of that lasted more than 3 hours, non-stop.
I enjoyed that time, I was tired but happy. Yet I physically cannot survive more than an hour on a call. I am not unique, I bet?
I have just verified an obvious thing: emotional connections and trust-building is many times faster in real life. But that’s not the point.
The point is: we’re working on an online course for community owners where we promise emotional connections, trust and a community. And I think we can make it, along with other clever minds in this world, such as Wes Kao.
